Stakes Day

Stakes Day marked the end of the Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington, so maybe that accounts for the high-level partying that was going on. By the end of the day, Bernie Brookes, Myer Chief Executive, was singing his heart out to "American Pie" as the Myer marquee was closing down; there was similar raucous dancing at Lexus (although no Bernie there). The guest list continued to dazzle, but everyone seemed to be letting looser: at Emirates marquee, the stars of the day were two breathtaking models: Chanel Iman, of Victoria's Secret fame, and her bff Heidy De la Rosa, a successful model in her own right. They got right into it, with Chanel occasionally photo-bombing people's happy snaps, and Heidy dancing along with the Arabic dancers who performed. Emirates was really a luxurious experience, and luckily I got my henna tattoo in their on-site spa before the lines started.

Also doing the rounds was Melissa Juratowitch: recent covergirl for Harper's Bazaar, winner of Australia's Next Top Model and the gal who got to wear Richard Nylon's Minnie Mouse-inspired hat, in collaboration with Disney Couture. She was there with her dad, proving how down-to-earth she is.

I judged Fashions on the Field for the first time, and much enjoyed the process, not only because of the girls who put so much effort into the clothes, but because of my fellow judges: Home and Away actors Isabella Giovinazzo, Jackson Gallagher, Cassie Howarth and Tai Hara.

Spotted in the Birdcage crowd were milliner Melissa Jackson, Melanie Vallejo and How Two Live bloggers Stef and Jess Dadon. But special mention has to go to La Maison G.H. Mumm: on the last day, I sat in for one of their champagne tastings, a private dining-table tour of various G.H. Mumm champagnes, explained to each of the guests by a Mumm rep, Hamish Millar. He sat alongside chef Mark Best of hatted restaurant Pei Modern, who talked everyone through the French food that was inspired by and matched to the G.H. Mumm range. It was a very privileged glimpse of the carnival indeed.
